USES OF GI ENDOSCOPY. There are two main uses of endoscopy - diagnostic and therapeutic. Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy are amongst the endoscopy procedures often necessary to find a cause for and subsequently to heal many illnesses. A suspected tumor or other disorders of the gastrointestinal system can be examined through the use of endoscopy. In addition, the physician is able to take a biopsy sample (small piece of suspicious tissue) for testing. Endoscopy is valuable in the removal of polyps (small growths) that may lead to cancer.
